TRAINING

We provide the training that is required for our members to participate in TDP research surveys. In order to participate in a survey, TDP members must be 16 years of age. 16 and 17 year-olds must have a guardian attend training with them and sign a waiver for them to participate in research surveys.

If you are interested in learning more about the dolphins, we invite you to attend the dolphin program/training workshop, whether or not you want to participate in a survey. Please be advised that some presentation material may not be suitable for children under 12 years of age.

Out training workshops are held on the coast. Currently they are held via ZOOM. We devote the first hour to knowledge about the Bottlenose Dolphin and the second hour focuses on the research survey protocol and includes additional dolphin information.

Check out the Calendar for times and locations of the next Training sessions.

If you are not interested in participating in surveys but would like to learn more about the Bottlenose estuarine dolphins, you are not obligated to attend the training portion of the workshop. There is no charge for the program

Members do pay their own survey expenses which are tax-deductible; those costs will be explained during the orientation and are also located on the SURVEY pages. There are minimal survey fees involved for Team Leaders, Assistants and Photographers.

Practical TRAINING for the Survey Team

Each Survey Team is made up of a Skipper, a Team Leader, a Photographer and an Assistant Team Leader. In order to serve in these positions, training is required to stay safe and to follow marine science protocol.

Newly trained members who would like to be part of a survey team as an Assistant Team Leader, are guided by seasoned Team members on the survey. Once a new team member has participated in several surveys and demonstrates that they have the knowledge and skills required, they can serve as Photographer, Skipper or Team Leader on future TDP surveys.

We welcome members who are interested in participating as part of our survey teams and expanding their dolphin knowledge and experience in the estuarine system!
