While the majority of our members come from Georgia, the Carolinas, and Florida, we have members from many other areas of the US and other countries. Everyone in TDP is a volunteer. No member receives a salary or stipend for their work or commitment of equipment.

Those members who choose to do so, conduct field research using 16-35 foot boats in estuaries, sounds and tidal rivers from Hilton Head, SC to Fernandina Beach, FL.  Our program is unique among currently active dolphin research programs in its longevity (22 years!!!) ,self-funding and all-volunteer core.

TDP members conduct once a month Photo ID Surveys from January through November to track previously identified dolphin and catalog new individuals. Members are not required to participate in all eleven sureys. A survey crew is comprised of a Team Leader, Skipper, Team Leader Asistant/Trainee, and Photographer. To prepare for team positions TDP members attend a free, two hour Training workshop. The surveys not only strive to determine the relative numbers of dolphins but also record their behavior and photograph their dorsal fins for Photo Identification Catalogs. The photos allow us to identify individuals and track animals over time and space in a non-invasive manner.

We also have members who volunteer their time with administrative duties, Education Outreach Programs, training workshops, serving on the Board and  various committees.

TDP members get together at quarterly dinners for comraderie and to hear fascinating speakers in the fields of marine and wildlife biology and environmental science. These socials are held after a research survey so it's always fun to hear about the successful dolphin encounters from other participating teams
