People who love dolphins, coastal Georgia, the marine environment, enjoy being outdoors and wish to actually participate in scientific field research are ideal candidates for The Dolphin Project. TDP seeks to add more members to its all-volunteer force which surveys along the coastal waters of Georgia and the southern portion of South Carolina. Scientific experience is not necessary to participate in TDP’s long-term, year-round study of the Atlantic bottlenose dolphin. While TDP's field research is concentrated in Georgia and lower South Carolina, membership is open to all but, only those 18+ can participate in boat surveys. Our members are primarily from the southeast but there are some from many other areas of the US and other countries.
TDP needs Skippers (with their own boat), Photographers (with their own film or digital SLR-type cameras with 300 mm or longer optical lenses). TDP is also looking for members willing to train to become Team Leaders after their initial experiences as Assistant Team Leaders.
Members cruise the estuarine waterways 11 Saturdays a year to record dolphin population data as well as other information. All 11 surveys are not mandatory though TDP encourages members to participate in at least two surveys per year or more if personal time permits. Photographers record individual dolphin fins to note unique markings which help to match them with animals observed on previous surveys and track them in space and time. Skippers are responsible for running their boats safely. Team Leaders make sure TDP procedures are followed, the Marine Mammal Protection Act is observed and all the data is valid.
Members need to train in their position prior to going out on their first survey. Training workshops are held in both the Atlanta and Savannah areas. An orientation for those interested in learning more about The Dolphin Project begins about 10:00 a.m. on the listed training dates.
There is no charge for the orientation or training. Members pay their own survey expenses which are tax deductible; those costs will be explained during the orientation.
